I recently collaborated with our county Personalized Learning Coach and our first grade team to bring more relevant, real-world tasks into our classrooms, where students are engaged!! The students participated in a hurricane task! They got in collaborative groups., researched hurricanes, and selected differentiated, family scenarios with certain budgets. Then, they had to create a list of materials/items needed to survive a hurricane. The students got to shop at different stores, aka different classrooms! At the end of the experience, students understood their learning targets and both the teachers and the students had FUN! Win-win for everyone!
