In 3rd grade CQI math, we have been working on 3-digit subtraction problems. We are working on the strategy of adding up. The open number line is helpful in recording the student’s strategy as he adds up from 119 to 718. He found the difference to be 599.

When working on math with your child, always ask your child why or how they got an answer, when it is both correct and incorrect. Encourage them to prove their thinking to you verbally and in writing. Make sure to give them wait time to process and think.
