I hope everyone had a fantastic holiday break! I cannot believe it is already 2013! School will start back Thursday, January 3rd. I am looking forward to seeing all of the students' smiling faces.
I am attaching our January newsletter for you to review. It discusses some changes coming up in the near future.
As always, please contact me with any questions or concerns!
Yesterday was our winter/holiday party. We spent time decorating cookies. We also made a special gift, a little holiday keepsake, for our families. Mr. Shannon even came to help out! The students were super excited and had a lot of fun! Enjoy the pictures!
Just a reminder, due to winter break, we do not have school from Thursday, December 20 - Wednesday, January 2. School will resume Thursday, January 3, 2013. I hope you enjoy the holidays with your family and friends!
During writing, we have been working on transformation stories. Transformation stories are where I give the students an image, and they use their imagination to transform or change it into something else. The students came up with some really creative and cute things!
Over the next week, we will be discussing the different holidays celebrated around the world and will be participating in lots of holiday activities. We will be learning about Hanukkah, Christmas, Kwanzaa, and the legend of the the poinsettia. Enjoy the pictures!
For the past few weeks, we have been learning about place value. The students can model and explain that a two-digit number represents amounts of tens and ones. Here are some pictures of our mathematical learning during math groups!
As you know, we do not have school the week of November 19th - November 23rd. I hope you all enjoy your Thanksgiving break with family and friends! Be sure to read over break and check out the games and activities on our web site! See you back in school on Monday, November 26th.
Last week in math, we worked on comparing the sizes of different objects and measuring different objects using non-standard units. The students did a great job! I was very impressed at how well they could prove and defend their mathematical thinking!
During literacy, we have been learning about verbs. Today, we made action verb people. The students drew a person and created a list of verbs or actions for their people. The students did a great job on their people and worked very well in collaborative partners!
For the past two weeks, we have been comparing and contrasting different tall characters. We have learned about Johnny Appleseed, John Henry, Paul Bunyan, Davy Crockett, and Annie Oakley. The students selected their favorite tall tale character and made a PowerPoint presentation sharing the information they learned about their favorite tall tale hero. Please take a moment to have your child share his or her presentation with you. I hope you enjoy them as much as I did!
